You live in a busy world. With technology everywhere, you're rarely more than a click away from your business. It’s easier than ever to get notified around the clock about anything from an order that will set you over this month's revenue goals to an email from an unsatisfied customer.
This is generally a good thing. Yet, there's also no shortage of things that contribute to business burnout. Here are three warning signs:
-
Putting off tasks you once enjoyed. As you go about your day, do you find that you dread making the customer follow-ups that you used to enjoy? Or are you dreading the thought of having to bake yet another wedding cake? There was a reason for starting this business. When you find yourself not enjoying your work anymore, take time to figure it out. Have your business partner, employee or trusted friend help you pinpoint the reason.
-
Feelings of ineffectiveness. Maybe in your personal training business, your clients aren't getting the results you want. Or your salon lost a slew of customers to a lower priced salon chain. These outcomes may make you feel that you're not good enough. But you are! The lack of effort on your client's part could be what's causing their success to stall. You can't prevent people from going elsewhere. Make a list of all the benefits you bring to your clients and then focus on them as you recruit new ones.
-
Getting annoyed about small tasks. Perhaps it's that time of year to renew your business insurance policy, or you need to update your computer. In the past you would've jumped on these tasks to get them done right away. When possible, delegate them to an employee or hire someone else to do these things. Perhaps you can automate your business insurance payments so you only get emails saying that the bill has been paid. Or you anhire a virtual assistant to help with simple tasks that can be done remotely and without much training. Ask yourself what you can implement to make your work life easier.
Avoiding burnout will look different for each person, and it will vary by your industry. It might look like taking on fewer clients or scheduling a quarterly four-day weekend so you have some extra time to reset. Getting professional help, whether in or on your business, is another option. Joining a Mastermind Course or hiring a coach can be a great help. Finally, don't forget to seek out professional medical advice if you feel that you don't understand why you're feeling burnt out.
